Natural Resources, Rural Land Use, Ranching, and Farming Needs.

John’s practice focuses on natural resources, agriculture, and other needs for ranchers, farmers, landowners, mineral and royalty interest owners, and small businesses. He also acts as outside counsel and provides transactional work for individuals and companies involved in the oil and gas, water, wind, and agricultural sectors. Additionally, John assists with forming business entities and drafting contracts for his clients’ businesses. He also drafts wills, makes and manages trusts, oversees estate planning, creates gun trusts, assists with firearms and shooting range issues, drafts liability releases, defends landowners against condemnation, assists with equine matters, and advises on personal, business, and agricultural liability protections. 

John started at firms in New Mexico and California before returning home to Texas, first representing oil and gas companies and pipeline operators tied up in the aftermath of Pacific Gas & Electric’s San Bruno pipeline explosion. He was also engaged in renewable energy project developments in Texas, New Mexico, and California, crafting contracts between various players and obtaining regulatory and permitting approvals. Next, John went in-house to manage mineral and royalty assets and assist with agricultural projects for two companies involved with oil and gas and cattle operations. 

Now, John is back home and assisting with various transactions and reconnecting with his ranching heritage. When not practicing law, John enjoys making Texas barbecue and being horseback, whether on the family’s Texas ranch or in the mountains of New Mexico. 

John graduated from the Texas Tech University School of Law in 2013, magna cum laude, where he served on its law review and was the national champion of the 2013 National Energy and Sustainability Moot Court Competition. He is licensed in Texas, New Mexico, and California (inactive).
